2009 Fall Open Discussion Series
The Fall series of discussions features three themes centering around leadership:
Balancing between trust and control
November 16, 2009, 18:00 - 19:30
Striking a balance between trust and control is difficult. In some organizations, there is too much trust, and too much left for the individual judgment of employees, which has led to major ethical and behavioral problems. On the other hand, some organizations create rigid control systems and structures that make employees resentful. How do we find a perfect balance between trust and control?
Balancing between creativity and structure
November 23, 2009, 18:00 - 19:30
The most challenging aspect of the manager's job is to know how to give the right amount of structure and guidance to help employees make the right decisions without getting in the way of the creativity that inspires growth. Organizations need structure, but too much structure inevitably crushes the creative spirit of the business. What is a healthy mix between creativity and structure in an organization?
The darker side of leadership: leading versus manipulating
November 30, 2009, 18:00 - 19:30
Leading equals manipulation? Leaders and manipulators rely heavily on persuasion that sometimes creates a sense of confusion about the intentions of a manager. Ineffective leaders can easily fall to temptation to use manipulation as an instrument of influence. Effective leadership creates meaning and significance. What does manipulation create?
