Balčiūnai Library welcomes and depends on gifts of books, audiovisual materials, and periodicals to build our collection and support our curriculum. The majority of our current collection has been donated, and we are extremely grateful for these resources.
Due to the cost of shipping and limitations on shelf space and staff time, we want to make sure potential donations will be useful. We encourage donors to send a list of available items including title, author, publisher, date of publication, and edition. Then the library staff, in cooperation with faculty members, can assess the need for the items. The following guidelines will be used in making the decision:
- Items should be relevant to the needs, academic or recreational, of our students, faculty and staff.
- Items should be in good condition, without water damage, extensive highlighting or writing, mold, brittle, torn, or missing pages.
- Duplicates will be added only if our copy is heavily used. Potential donors can check our catalog, http://librarycatalog.lcc.lt to see what we already have. We prefer not to add editions of titles that are older than what we already have.
- Gifts of periodicals should be limited to long runs (at least 3 years), or those needed to fill gaps in our current holdings. We do not need hard copies of periodicals that we have access to electronically.
Donors usually cover the costs of shipping but may contact the library for other arrangements if that is a problem. We can issue a receipt for items received, but appraisal for tax purposes is the responsibility of the donor.
Gifts are received without restrictions; if it is determined that an item does not meet our needs, it may be offered to another library, sold at our book sale, or discarded.
If donors wish, bookplates noting the donor’s name will be added to the gift books.
Questions concerning gifts to the library should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org
