Communicative Language Assessment: Promoting Best Practice for English Language Classrooms: An Interactive Workshop for Lower Secondary School Teachers

The European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA) and the educational institutions Vilnius University, Panevėžio 5-oji gimnazija, Kauno Jono Jablonskio gimnazija, and LCC International University invite you to participate in an all-day interactive workshop on classroom-based language assessment for secondary schools. The workshop aims to bring secondary school English language teachers together to create language assessments for their classrooms that are relevant to instruction and help teachers guide students’ language learning. The days’ sessions will provide an overview of classroom-based language assessments relevant to secondary school contexts, discuss what we as teachers should consider when creating classroom-based assessments, and when adapting textbook and class materials to fit classroom assessment needs specific to teachers’ classroom contexts. Lower secondary school language teachers are especially encouraged to attend. Certificates of attendance are awarded to participants at the end of the day.

Implementing Immediate Writing Feedback in the Classroom: A workshop on Write and Improve

For those who teach writing in a foreign language, providing developmental feedback to students can be a daunting task. Selecting which language features to focus on when evaluating texts, presenting feedback in an understandable way to students, and taking the needed to mark students’ writing can make teachers feel overwhelmed and overworked. With the help of corpus linguistics research, Cambridge English has developed a free online writing program (Write & Improve) that allows students to write a response to a number of pre-made writing prompts and receive immediate feedback on the complexity of their overall writing (mapped to the CEFR levels) and misuse of language structures and vocabulary. This 90-minute workshop aims to help English as a foreign language teachers become familiar with this online language program and learn how they might be able to implement it in their own foreign language classroom contexts.

LT National English exam new assessment scales: Writing for better marks

As we know, the assessment scales for the national exam are adjusted this year to include marks for grammar, appropriateness, richness and mechanics. We will discuss the new assessment scales and offer ideas of how to help your students develop writing skills to score will on the exam. A Bouquet of Learners: Teaching Towards Multiple Intelligences

Each student is special; they bring their own personalities to our classrooms. Pupils have different learning styles: some learners need oral instructions while other learners depend on visual information. How can we address our classes knowing that each student learns differently? Multiple intelligence theory defines the variety of ways that children learn best. The seminar will outline nine “intelligences” and discuss how classroom teachers might consider helping students to learn how to learn by identifying learning strategies.

Preparing Champions: Teaching Public Speaking Skills

This seminar will assist English language teachers to prepare students to present public speeches. Giving a good speech takes time and talent but many pupils can do quite well with basic tips and guidance. Public speaking is a professional skill that your students will need throughout life. During this seminar, we will discuss the basics of good public speaking, we will see videos of past speech contestants in the English Speakers Union National Contest, and we will work specifically on the topic of this year’s competitions. So come to the seminar and find out how to make good speakers -better!
