Residence Life program is a program that surrounds the experience of living “on-campus”. It is a common program at North American universities and colleges. At LCC students live in halls that are called residence halls, not dormitories. This is an intentional decision on our part. The word dormitory comes from the verb “dormer” which means to sleep. We know that MUCH more than sleeping happens in our halls – people create, engage, relate, and renew themselves there. They live or reside in our halls, hence residence halls. We are here to educate students about the skills needed to be healthy and productive members of society.
The residence halls are staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week. The residence life staff is made up of Resident Assistants (student leaders) and Resident Directors (professional staff members), who, together, work to promote community in the residence halls. The goal of the ResLife team is to make University Housing feel like home for its residents by creating a safe, educational and fun atmosphere through relationship building, policy enforcement and programming.
The Residence Life program facilitates:
- relationship building
- a healthy environment by balancing policy enforcement with encouraging positive behaviors
- learning opportunities and community building through floor and hall events
- community and team building
Each year many fun and educational events are planned in the halls – sometimes for all students, sometimes for individual halls, and sometimes for students who live on a specific floor. Events are based on student interests and vary from year to year.
Here is a list of just some of the events that have been held during the past few years:
