LCC International University student Zina Salim Hassan Hamu has been awarded the Emerging Young Leaders Award for her dedication to portray the stories of the Yazidi people through photo journalism. The award is granted by the U.S. Department of State to ten exceptional young leaders from all over the world. On May 14, Ambassador Hall hosted Zina at a reception in the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius to recognize her outstanding achievement.

Zina was a high school senior in Northern Iraq, when in 2014 ISIS terrorists occupied her hometown. Zina and her family had to leave immediately. During two years that she spent in a refugee camp with her family, Zina became a self-taught photojournalist and received a full Middle East Scholarship to come study at LCC. She is currently pursuing her education in Contemporary Communications and we are certain that her profound impact on the communities she serves will only be enhanced by the encouragement that receiving this award has been.
